FAQ

Read to Feed kids and leaders ask the greatest questions. Here we post those most commonly asked, along with our responses, about the Read to Feed program and its various adaptations, Heifer and its work around the world, the animals, reading and group activities, and more.

Do you have a question that is not addressed here? Send it to readtofeed@heifer.org

Question:
As a teacher of an economically diverse group of children, I don’t want our Read to Feed program to become a competition to see how many books any one child can read, or who can raise the most money. Do you have suggestions?
Response

Question:
Can middle and high school students participate? This project appears to be well suited to the elementary grades----which is great!! However, I teach high school students and am always encouraging them to branch out and READ. I was thinking--- could we do this with 16 year olds? The work your organization ties beautifully into the subject area I teach, raises awareness of global issues and appeals to teenagers idealism.
Response

Question:
I am organizing a book club with my 8 year old grandaughter and her three friends. How are the stickers awarded for the certificate?
Response

Question:
I am sure I speak for many teachers. How much TIME will this program take?
Response

Question:
I have been told the Read to Feed program is being used in many public schools. Is the program affiliated with any church or religious group? I do not find any "religious" references in the Read to Feed literature or website.
Response

Question:
Is Heifer a non-profit organization?
Response

Question:
My child’s preschool offers a unique opportunity for kids to be actively involved with the natural world. Part of their mission is to also encourage community involvement. I recently came across your Read to Feed program. I am wondering if there is a way to adapt the program for non-readers. We think it would be the perfect opportunity to introduce the children to the idea of contributing to the world around them.
Response

Question:
Our Read to Feed kids would love to interact with children in other countries or in the U. S. who are the beneficiaries of Heifer. Can you help us make this connection?
Response

Question:
We will be starting the Read to Feed program in a couple of weeks in my daughter's second grade class. We would like to emphasize the benefits of farm animals, other than meat. What are your suggestions?
Response

Question:
What about the animals?
Response

Question:
What makes a book a "Heifer Pick"? What criteria are used?
Response

Question:
While doing Read to Feed I really don’t want my students to simply be reading a lot of books. I would rather focus on quality, not quantity.
