Lessons from a Village Called Earth
Heifer International's "Lessons From a Village Called Earth—3rd/4th Grades" is an elementary curriculum guide for teachers and students who want to change the world. This development education curriculum is included in the Read to Feed program. It is designed to teach children about world hunger and poverty, and provides them with a way to be part of the solution to these important issues. The guide is designed to accompany Beatrice's Goat, the story of how a goat changed the life of a little girl, her family and her entire community. With the gift of a goat from Heifer International, Beatrice's family was able to make enough money to send her to school, and the goat's offspring were given to other struggling families ("Passing on the Gift").
Beatrice's Goat introduces the concepts of charitable giving and is a simple way for students to understand and relate to complex concepts, like world poverty and social justice, which are introduced in each curriculum unit. Students educate their families and friends about world hunger, and, by reading books, can raise money to buy animals for families like Beatrice's. This unique combination of reading, global education and technology is a powerful tool. Engaged and inspired to action, students read avidly and seek ways to help others. The areas of study in this educational curriculum are as follows:
Each unit includes:
- Overview - An overview of each unit summarizes the purpose and components of the lesson.
- National Standards - Standards are provided by various educational councils for each area of study.
- Materials Needed List
- Lesson Procedure
- Performance Assessment - Students read and/or write according to given instructions to apply what they have learned in the unit.
Read to Feed Website
Several of the activities on the Read to Feed website relate directly to this elementary lesson plan, so that students can apply what they are learning to "real" situations and circumstances. These activities include spelling games, such as Crossword Fun and Word Search, and a memory game called Peeking Pairs. There are pictures of farm animals that students can Print and Do, which provide a reminder of the benefits that these animals can provide to families all over the world. Students are also able to read actual stories about Real Kids and see first-hand what the gift of an animal can do for a family and an entire community! As the students learn more about the importance of "Passing on the Gift", they can send E-postcards to friends and family members to share what they have learned.
