Beatrice Biira with sibling

Beatrice's Story:

Beatrice Biira lived with her mother and five brothers and sisters in Uganda (in Africa). Every day, nine-year old Beatrice helped her mother in the fields, ground casava into flour, watched her younger siblings, carried water…and dreamed of going to school. The family barely had enough to eat. One day, after the family had attended a training course to learn how to properly care for the animal, a dairy goat arrived as a gift from Heifer International. Dairy goats can give about four quarts of milk daily! In return for taking very good care of the goat, it provided Beatrice and her five brothers and sisters with fresh milk daily, and extra income from selling the milk that was left.

Before the goat, Mugisa (which means "luck") arrived, there were important nutrients missing in Beatrice's diet. After a short time of drinking the goat milk, Beatrice and her siblings were much healthier!
